The Leadership Exchange: Equitable Community Building and the Obama Foundation

Back to All Events

Join us this semester for our virtual speaker series featuring exciting and innovative nonprofit and social impact leaders. Speakers will share their diverse perspectives on a range of nonprofit, philanthropic and civic sector challenges and important leadership lessons. Next in the Leadership Exchange series is Michael Smith, who will chat with us about his leadership journey, cross-sector community building and development, working in both the public and nonprofit sectors, and creating lasting change (among many other topics!).

Michael is the Executive Director of My Brother’s Keeper Alliance at the Obama Foundation, which leads a national call to action to build safe and supportive communities for boys and young men of color where they are valued and have clear pathways to opportunity.

Michael was part of the team that designed and launched the My Brother’s Keeper initiative, and was appointed Special Assistant to President Obama and Senior Director of Cabinet Affairs for My Brother’s Keeper, managing the initiative and interagency Task Force at the White House.

Prior to joining the White House team, Michael was director of the Social Innovation Fund, Senior Vice President of Social Innovation at the Case Foundation, and helped build national initiatives aimed at bridging the “digital divide.” Michael is an Atlantic Institute Racial Equity Senior Fellow and a member of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America’s Alumni Hall of Fame, the highest honor bestowed by the organization.

More about the series

Each conversation will begin at 12pm and start with a 20-30 minute interview, which will be recorded (for UMD student professional development and coursework). When the interview concludes, the conversation will open up for you to interact with the guest and ask questions. After signing up, you will receive a calendar invitation with a link to the video conference.
